What a day!
On 4th July 2026, the WordPress community came together once again for the 3rd Edition of WordCamp Masaka, and what an incredible gathering it was.
This year’s event, themed “Building Inclusive Digital Economies,” reminded us that technology is at its best when it creates opportunities for everyone. From inspiring talks and hands-on learning to meaningful conversations and new friendships, WordCamp Masaka 2026 was a celebration of community, collaboration, and the power of open source.
Unlike previous editions, this year’s WordCamp was held as a one-day event, carefully packed with insightful sessions, practical workshops, networking opportunities, and community activities. Every moment was designed to ensure attendees left with new knowledge, new connections, and renewed inspiration.
A Community Without Borders
One of the highlights of this year’s WordCamp was the diversity of the people who attended.
We were delighted to welcome participants from Uganda, Kenya, and Ghana, demonstrating once again that the WordPress community knows no borders.
The event brought together people from all walks of life, including:
- Developers and designers
- Entrepreneurs and freelancers
- Community-Based Organisations (CBOs)
- Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs)
- Educators
- Students
- Digital marketers
- Content creators
- Business owners
Whether someone was attending their very first WordCamp or had been part of the community for years, everyone had something to learn and something to contribute.
That is what makes WordCamp special.
Students Continue to Inspire Us
One thing that has remained constant throughout every edition of WordCamp Masaka is the enthusiasm of students.
This year was no exception.
We were particularly encouraged by the wonderful participation from Equator University. Both staff and students turned up in great numbers and played an important role in making the event a success.
Beyond attending the sessions, they helped prepare and set up the computer laboratory that hosted our practical WordPress learning sessions.
Their commitment, teamwork, and willingness to serve reflected the true spirit of community that WordCamp is built upon.

Learning by Doing
While the talks inspired attendees throughout the day, one of the most exciting parts of the event was the hands-on WordPress practical session.
Newcomers and students had the opportunity to roll up their sleeves, install WordPress, explore the dashboard, and begin building websites with guidance from experienced community members in a session led by Stephen Dumba, Florence Namyalo and Cinderella Mbabazi and the IT team of Equator University of Science and Technology.
For many participants, this was their first time working with WordPress.
There is something incredibly rewarding about watching someone move from curiosity to confidence in just a few hours.
This practical approach has become one of the defining experiences of WordCamp Masaka, ensuring that attendees leave not only inspired but also equipped with practical skills they can continue building on.
Contributing to WordPress in Luganda
WordCamp is about more than using WordPress.
It is also about contributing to it.
This year, participants took part in a Luganda Translation Workshop, where community members, led by Moses Cursor worked together to translate WordPress into Luganda.
The workshop demonstrated how open source thrives when communities contribute their knowledge, language, and culture.
By making WordPress more accessible in local languages, we help make the web more inclusive for future users across Uganda.
Every translated word is a contribution that benefits countless others. By the end of the session the team translated 291 strings and reviewed 97 strings across WordPress core files, themes, and plugins. Full report is documented here
Hints for schools and non profits
Joan’s talk “Free Doesn’t Always Mean Basic: How Nonprofits, Educators & Startups Can Access Premium, State of the Art Digital Tools at Zero Cost!” came in handy for the dozens of educators and the not for profit community who were guided on how to get premium grade online services at zero cost.
Conversations That Matter
Throughout the day, attendees explored topics aligned with our theme, Building Inclusive Digital Economies.
The sessions challenged us to think differently about technology and its role in creating opportunities for everyone.
Conversations covered innovation, entrepreneurship, digital inclusion, artificial intelligence, web development, community building, accessibility, and the future of the open web.
But some of the best conversations happened outside the sessions.
During tea breaks.
Over lunch.
In the hallways.
Between people meeting for the first time.
Those moments often become the beginning of new collaborations, mentorships, friendships, and opportunities.
That is the magic of WordCamp.
